Lost at the MGC 2020
A downloadable game
This project was completed in 2019 in the hopes of playing the whole game (all 10 carts) at the Midwest Gaming Classic of 2020. Due to the pandemic, the MGC 2020 was cancelled and so the physical carts and the larger game were never played as intended. As such, it was decided to release them publicly.
The way this game is intended to play is a seed cart "cart0" would be photographed and video shared in online communities as a game that was "found" at the MGC with the hopes that maybe others had found carts as well. The remaining carts of the game would be scattered around the MGC in the hopes that someone would find one and then post about it... making it an AR game of sorts, but with the physical carts that worked on actual hardware. A website is embedded in each of the cart's videos that asks for a password. The password for each cart is hidden but can be discovered by either having the cart in hand, or via the pictures of the cart and the rom or a video of the rom contained in the cart. The website is still live as it will be used for successive versions of this game.
As these games were not created via GB Studio, I'm not able to export .pocket versions of them. To be honest, these games look the best on the original GBC lcd as the refresh rate is low enough that the frames blend better, but they also work well on systems with aftermarket lcds, or the Analogue Pocket. If you're to emulate these, they were tested and work perfectly in bgb.
Included in the downloads are the individual roms that were loaded onto each cart and the corresponding label. If you intend to play the whole game, the labels are necessary.
All videos were converted to GBC format via GBVideoPlayer2 created by LIJI32, available here: https://github.com/LIJI32/GBVideoPlayer2
Labels were created in Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop using random art assets found via Google searches and pictures of my buddy and I. (As well as custom art when needed)
No commercial product was intended. These were made to be something bizarre that'd gather attention and see if this kind of game would work. If you attempt to solve the overall puzzle, enjoy! The fun is more in the journey than it is the reward.
These are GBC games.
